One night a few weeks ago I woke up with an idea for celebrating my birthday! I am not one to pass up on an occasion to be with my friends and I must admit I like a bit of attention. ( Don't we all?) and what better time to be a little spoilt than one's birthday!
The idea was a Potluck party, meaning the emphasis on fun and getting potluck- and having fun in whatever casual and funny thing you wear ; and the food simple and easy and filling Hence the choice of a stew! thus potluck... I sent out a cheerful invite to say we are having a sing-song around the piano ( a recent gift from a very good friend who emigrated to Australia) I chose old and well-known songs , typed them out and found a friend who is a pianist.
One friend offered to bring my favourite dessert, Sago pudding with a caramel sauce, I asked one friend to bring chips and dip, another for a plate of snacks, and another offered a Lemon Meringue for with the coffee.Everyone brought their own drinks, I bought two bottles of wine, and put up some balloons. I had to move chairs from all over the house and seated all 12 of us.
I was not disappointed when all these characters arrived- we had a fairy Godmother complete with crown and magic wand, her husband in a Texan hat with a play-play horse, the kind on a stick...... who says we cant get in touch with the child within?? Then came another couple - he, a very tall man with a Japanese Kimono and a Chinese-looking cap with the long plait and his short wife in her pyjamas with a belt, a beanie with flower on and her very comfy slippers!! Next came another couple looking rather Spanish but with a little black bowler hat ,along came another friend all in black with the most amazing hat , another one with a rainbow outfit and pink crocs... and then the last couple with the lady in a pale pink shawl over a dark dress and her husband vey dashing in a navy shirt with the exact same shade of pink flowers- yes two flowers down the front.
So we sang and laughed ate the stew on rice , enjoyed the desserts and had a right royal time... And lastly I got some amazing presents like 2 tickets to the Gospel Skouspel and a year's subscription to my favourite magazine, a brand new journal and gel pen, a set of plates, bowls and coffee mugs, a bottle of good wine and Tablerone chocolates, and oh yes a superb bottle of good brandy to warm the cockles of my heart this winter!!
So what a celebration it was.... and it did not cost an arm and a leg! Actually the cherry on top was that my two children who stayed in the background watched over the food and did all the dishes!! How's that for being spoilt?? Thank you Lord for a wonderful birthday.
